The Palm Pre was Palm´s big event in 2009. It was a long time being built and it was worth the wait. Take a look here at the smartphone that led into the current trend for mobile cell phones.
It is said that the Palm Pre was fashioned after a river rock. It looks that way. It is smooth and has a screen that blends in with the body of the phone. It looks gorgeous. You may have heard that it is a “fingerprint magnet” because it is made with plastic. But once you actually use it, you realize that fingerprints are not just attracted, but a major nuisance on the screen. Even so, they come off easily because of the smooth outside finish of the phone. Speaking of the screen, it is a 3.1 inch ( 7.9 centimeters if you are not in the United States ) display with TFT technology. It puts out an impressive 16.7 million colors and does so with 320 by 480 pixels. Needless to say, the display is of good quality. It even has one of those accelerometers to play with. You can turn the Pre from landscape mode to portrait mode and back without pushing any buttons. Software does it automatically.
You will get a fairly good shot with the camera, since the Palm Pre comes with a three or 3.2 megapixel version depending on who you buy it from. There is no video available, which bums a lot of people out. If you are one of the lucky ones, you can get a software update and hope to get the video working. The audio is incredible ! You can get super good volume on a call and the earbud is not going to disappoint either. You have the standard 3.5 millimeter jack for an earpiece or other device. The audio standards that are supported on the Pre are WAV, AAC, MP3 and AMR.
Palm made its own version of an operating system with the Palm Pre. They used Linux and they did a good job of it. It is something you will want to experience. Palm calls it WebOS. Catchy. The widgets used on the screen are named “cards”. The process is simple to perform. You swipe your finger and you are in a program, with very little effort. You are advised not to open more than eight or so applications ( programs ). Actually, you can open more than that and not have problems. The processor is strong and the Pre has 256 megabytes of RAM to play with. You will delight in the speed. The WebOS groups programs together intelligiently. You will have the social sites like Facebook, Google, Yahoo, and others piled in together. The way the “cards” are set up, you can work within several applications and not get lost. To close a program just use a quick movement and take it off the screen.
One bit of bad news is that the Palm Pre does not come with a memory card slot. No MicroSD cards for this bad boy. An impotent replacement for this is that you do have tethering available. You can bluetooth information to this device, so all is not lost. You also have a Micro USB ( 2.0 ) connector for a direct link to other digital devices.
You are connected with just about all the networks available, including Wi-Fi. The actual networks available to you will depend on where you live. The Pre has international GSM for traveling convenience. It weighs a mere 4.8 ounces ( 133 grams ) and will not feel like a rock in your pocket. GPS is built in. The battery is removable and weighs in at 1150 mAh. That gives five hours of talk time.
If you are not totally pleased with your iPhone, the Palm Pre should be the next place you look for a smartphone.
